The Big Read

It's time once again for Princeton LOVES the Big Read!

This year's Big Read will focus on American Indian literature and artwork. The selected book for grades 7-12 is The Sky Watched: Poems of Ojibwe Lives by Linda Grover Students in grade six will read When Thunders Spoke by Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve. Students in grades pre-k through 5 will read Sky Sisters by Jan Bourdeau Waboose.

Thanks to a generous grant from the East Central Regional Arts Council, we are able to provide 150 books per grade for 6th, 7th and 8th graders, 150 books for 9-12 grade and 40 books for Student Services. There will also be books available to give away to students who want them. In addition, grades pre-K through 5 will receive books in their classroom in order to participate. Two years ago we were able to bring the author of the Big Read book to Princeton, and we are fortunate to be able to do so again this year. Author Linda Grover will be visiting the Middle School and High School to work with students on poetry lessons.

This year's Big Read will also include an art component! Birchbark artist Pat Kruse will be working with students on a birchbark project. Once the project is completed, the piece will be hung at Fairview Northland in Princeton.

Princeton Loves the Big Read will end with a Poetry Slam on March 2 at 7 pm at the Performing Arts Center. Author Linda Grover will kick off the event by reading some of her own work, and students will participate by reading their own poetry. The birchbark art created by students with the help of Pat Kruse will also be on display. Stay tuned for more details on the Poetry Slam!
