At Princeton Public Schools, students are getting a start on their future careers through immersive Career Academy programs. One such student is Hannah Doty, who chose to pursue the Human Services Career Academy to explore her passion for working with children.
"I come from a big family, and I've always loved being around kids," Hannah shares. "The Human Services Academy allowed me to really explore my interests through hands-on activities and training."
As part of the academy, Hannah has participated in a Youth Skills Training experience at a local primary school. In her role, she works one-on-one and in small groups with around 40 students per day, assisting with assessments, instruction, and overall development.
"Getting real-world experience in a classroom setting has been invaluable," Hannah says. "It confirmed that I really do enjoy working with children and want to pursue a career allowing me to do that."
In addition to the practical training, Hannah credits the Career Academy with teaching her crucial professional skills, such as accountability and resume building, that will serve her well no matter what path she chooses. “My experience within the Career Academy is all positive,” Hannah says. “Even if I don’t go into the exact profession that I have been ‘testing out,’ I have learned many useful skills I wouldn’t have otherwise learned if it wasn’t for this opportunity.”
While her current plan is to finish her associate’s degree at Anoka-Ramsey Community College before pursuing nursing with a focus on pediatrics, Hannah emphasizes how much the Human Services Academy has enriched her high school experience.
"The teachers, my advisor Mrs. Magnuson, my Youth Skills supervisor Michelle Lindell, and my parents have all been incredibly supportive throughout this journey," she says. For students considering a Career Academy, Hannah's advice is simple: "Just do it! You never know the amazing opportunities and experiences that could come from it."
The Career Academies at Princeton High School are providing students like Hannah with invaluable career exploration and preparation. Through partnerships with local businesses, tailored coursework, and hands-on training opportunities, students are getting a head start in fields they are passionate about before ever leaving high school.
