Princeton High School’s Officiating, Sport, and Coaching Program, which prepares students to become certified officials in multiple sports, has received a Silver Star of Innovation Award from the Minnesota Association of Secondary School Principals (MASSP) for its outstanding contribution to student development and athletic excellence. The program, introduced during the 2019-2020 school year, has proven successful.
The Officiating, Sport, and Coaching Program offers students the unique opportunity to become certified officials in various sports, including basketball, softball, baseball, and football. The curriculum combines online learning with instructor assistance. Students who successfully complete the course earn an officiating certificate from the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS). Officiating can be a lifelong part-time job or even a career.
The course focuses on essential skills and knowledge in officiating, sports, the characteristics of a strong athlete, and coaching that encompasses both winning and character development. This comprehensive approach ensures that students gain expertise in officiating and have the opportunity to reflect on and develop the qualities of being a strong and ethical person, coach, and sports official.
"The Officiating, Sport, and Coaching Program has had a transformative impact on our school and students," said Darin Laabs the Activities Director at Princeton High School. "Beyond expanding their athletic knowledge and skills, students have taken on paid officiating roles within our school community. Additionally, the program serves as a platform for fostering important discussions around character development, emphasizing the Princeton Habits of a Tiger, and instilling essential values in our students."
More than 100 students have participated in the program in the past four years. The impact on student development, confidence, and skill acquisition is evident through consistently high completion rates — 98% in the first three years.
Striking a balance between the rigors of a quality program and ensuring accessibility for all students required careful consideration when adding the course to the curriculum. Princeton High School successfully navigated the challenges to create a program that has garnered recognition for its effectiveness and impact. “We’re excited to offer niche programming like this to interested students,” said Barb Muckenhirn. “It takes careful consideration of staffing, scheduling, and facility space, but we’re dedicated to expanding our Career Academies and other programming to support students in all their career and college goals.”
The recognition of Princeton’s Officiating, Sport, and Coaching Program with the Silver Star of Innovation Award underscores the district's commitment to providing diverse opportunities for student growth and success. The district is dedicated to fostering excellence in athletics, character development, and student achievement.
