Who can enroll in supplemental POA courses?

Any student that is enrolled at PHS, with parent/guardian approval.

How do I enroll in a supplemental POA course?

Complete all required enrollment paperwork or meet with your dean to explore options.

What are the enrollment deadlines?

Before the start of each trimester.

Can I drop a POA course?

You may drop a course with no record in Skyward within the first 10 days of the course. If dropped after 10 days, your transcripts will show a record of the course and a letter grade of F. An incomplete can be given per teacher discretion to students who have been making progress but need extra time to complete the course requirements. If course work is not completed, the grade will be changed to a failing grade.

What are the course start and end times?

Course sessions align with the PHS trimester schedule.

How many courses can I take through POA?

Being a successful online learner requires time and dedication to your studies. During the school year it recommended that students demonstrate the ability to work independently before increasing their number of supplemental courses.

Are my POA courses NCAA approved?

Not at this time.

Will I have an instructor from PHS?

You will be assigned a classroom at PHS and an instructor will be in charge of taking your attendance and tracking your progress. In some cases, your POA instructor may be the same instructor.

How does grading work for POA?

When students turn in projects or assignments that include writing responses, they see a message that the assignment will be sent to the teacher for grading.

Why do I need to complete orientation?

We want your learning experience to be as enriching as possible. Attending orientation is a requirement. This orientation is designed to give you the information and tools you need to be successful in your online courses.

Why do I need to be in a classroom for my online class?

PHS has determined that all supplemental students will be required to be in class for their POA courses.

Can I leave school during my online course?

No. Students are required to be in their assigned classroom during their POA courses.

Can I go to another location during my POA course?

No. Students are required to be in their assigned classroom during their POA courses.

How can I support my child in online learning?

Encourage your child to use help-seeking strategies if he/she doesn’t understand something. This includes contacting the teacher, requesting a time to meet during virtual or office hours, asking peers for clarity, conducting research to learn more, or rereading the instructions for clarity. To create good study habits, students should set a schedule, set aside uninterrupted time to focus on coursework, and actively participate with their classmates and the instructor. Online learning is independent learning.

Being a successful online learner means that students also understand the importance of digital citizenship. Parents can take advantage of free resources to help promote responsibility and ethical use of technology. Plagiarism is never acceptable and could result in an automatic failure of the course. What if I work, can I come late or leave early?
No. Students are required to be in their assigned classroom during their POA courses.

How will my attendance be tracked?

Attendance will be taken through our Skyward system. Students must attend their online classroom or they will be counted absent for that hour.

What are the teachers in the classroom going to be doing during the class?

The teacher in the classroom will be tracking the student progress, taking attendance, and will be available for minor online questions.

Can I use my own device or my phone.

Cellular phones are very difficult to use for online courses and is not recommended. All students will have access to a district owned device for POA coursework.
