We recognize the challenges to family life and will continue to focus on not overwhelming staff, students and families. This is an unprecedented time and we know that we will have to make changes in our plan along the way and we will communicate those to you as promptly as possible. Thank you for your patience as we put this distance learning plan into action.

I. Overview of Distance Learning
Vision:
Minnesota is the best state in the country for children to grow up in - for those of all races, ethnicities, religions, economic statuses, gender identities, sexual orientation, (dis)abilities, and zip codes. -Minnesota Department of Education
Guiding Principles:
- Ensure equity and access to education
- Students matter more than content
- Focus student academic time and effort on the things that matter most
- Be flexible, patient, and kind
- Learn. Improve the plan and process over time
Priorities
Princeton Public Schools will work together to equitably serve every student. We will face the challenges the current pandemic poses to our work with empathy, a focus on service, and courage. We believe that continuing our students’ education during the pandemic is critical. Through our service we aim to provide our students with the connection, sense of community, continuity, support and structure they need to provide normalcy during this unprecedented time.
Purpose
Ensure that every student at Princeton Public Schools receives an equitable education and has equal access to learning and instruction during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Maintain student-teacher relationships as well as student-student relationships during a period of social distancing.
II. Two Plans for Distance Learning
Princeton Public Schools will offer students accessibility to teachers and learning through their choice of two plans:
- Tiger Plan - For connecting with teachers electronically.
- Orange Plan - For connecting with teachers non-electronically.
It is assumed students will be using the Tiger Plan unless we have been in contact to select the Orange Plan. If your student would like to or needs to switch to the Orange Plan please contact Sonia Strickland at sonia.strickland@isd477.org or 763-389-6166.
Both plans have centered around five C's: Collaboration, Communication, Content, Critical Thinking, Creation
- Collaboration: Prioritize connection; maintain student-teacher relationships as well as student-student relationships.
- Communication: Make communication clear and supportive. The desired result is that students and families stay organized and do not feel overwhelmed.
- Content: Identify what is MOST important for our students to know and be able to do to focus student time and effort. Make the learning relevant and accessible for all. In many cases this means having students engage in critical thinking that will stretch each individual student's ability level.
- Critical Thinking: Emphasize quality over quantity. What questions or prompts would help students think about content in deep and meaningful ways?
- Creation: What should students read, discuss, write about, or create in other ways in order to demonstrate their learning?
Content:
- Content will focus student time and effort on what is most important for students to know and be able to do by grade level or content area.
- Critical (analysis-level) thinking will be emphasized. This can often be achieved by asking students to explain their thinking, justify their conclusion, make comparisons, etc.
Expectations of amount of time for student work with either plan:
- PreK; Maximum of 20 minutes of teacher interaction and student work per day.
- K-5; Maximum of 1 hour of teacher instruction and student work per day, plus independent reading time.
- 6-12; Maximum of 20 minutes of teacher instruction and student work per day, per course.
III. Tiger Plan Details
Communication/Connection:
- PreK-8 classroom teachers will reach out directly to students (and families as appropriate) to share communication details and content of courses.

VII. Grading
In an effort to provide a fair, equitable, and meaningful assessment and grading system for distance learning Princeton Public Schools has developed the following systems for assessing and providing feedback to students during the Covid-19 Pandemic.
Primary School (Grades K-2) and Intermediate School (Grades 3-5):
Students will be honored for their hard work, dedication, and learning from home through a distance learning certificate instead of the traditional report card. Each certificate will include student specific, strength-based feedback from classroom teachers.
Middle School (Grades 6-8):
Life Skills - Students will be assessed only on the “Effort and Work Completion” life skill for Distance Learning during Trimester 3.
Academic Skills -Students will earn E (Exceeds), M (Meets), P (Partially Meets), and IE (Insufficient Evidence) for final academic skill grades in Trimester 3 during distance learning.
High School & Princeton Online Academy (Grades 9-12):
Students will earn a grade of A, B, C, or D. These grades will count toward a credit earned and will be calculated in the student's GPA. The grade of "F" will not be used. Students who do not submit enough evidence for the teacher to award a grade will be contacted by their teacher to discuss the development of a plan for course completion. If the plan is not completed at a satisfactory level, the student will have "NC" (No Credit) on their transcript. NC will not count toward an earned credit and will not be calculated in the student's GPA. Additional information will be included in the High School weekly update and to students as necessary by PHS teachers.
Princeton ALC (Grades 9-12+):
Students will earn a grade of A, B, C, or D. These grades will count toward a credit earned and will be calculated in the student's GPA. The grade of "F" will not be used. Students who do not submit enough evidence in a course for the teacher to award a grade will be contacted by their teacher to discuss the development of a plan for course completion. If the plan is not completed at a satisfactory level, the student will have "NC" (No Credit) on their transcript. NC will not count toward an earned credit and will not be calculated in the student's GPA. Additional information will be communicated to students as necessary by ALC staff.
VIII. IEP and 504 Plan
In the event that ISD477 is required to implement this Distance Learning Plan to slow or stop the spread of COVID-19, the school must ensure that students with disabilities also have equitable access to the same opportunities, including the provision of FAPE. In order to do this, school teams will need to determine if amendments are needed for existing IEPs and 504 plans. Individualized Distance Learning Plans will be developed for all students receiving special education services under IDEA (Part C (ages birth - 2) and Part B (ages 3 -21)) and Section 504 of the Americans with Disabilities Act contingent upon the district implementing a Distance Learning Plan under the guidance of the MDE IEPs and 504 plans need to be amended to include these individualized plans and parents need to be notified via a Prior Written Notice (PWN). Districts will ensure participation of required team members in the amendment process via meetings through virtual means or through individual consultation using other available resources with necessary team members given parental consent.
Evaluation procedures, meetings, services and supports will not be conducted or provided during the period of school closure. This time frame includes March 17-27, 2020. When school is closed, special education services and 504 accommodations are not provided as no instruction or services were provided to any students during the period of school closure. When school commences, in accordance with a district’s Distance Learning Plan, provisions of special education and 504 under the Americans With Disabilities Act will resume.
