Family Update 12/10/21

December 10, 2021

Dear Parents/Guardians:

We continue our social and emotional learning lesson this week.  We are on Lesson 10 in the Second Step materials.  Our 3rd graders will be talking about making friends, our 4th graders will be working with emotion management, and our 5th graders will be focused on calming down and how that can help with strong emotions.

We have been sharing some of the background of what we do with Tiger Pride at the Intermediate School.  Last week we shared the process we use when we experience problem behavior.  This week we will talk a little about how we use data.  We have a Tiger Pride team made up of staff members who evaluate how we are doing as a school with Tiger Pride.  We have staff evaluate our school in four areas - School-wide, Classroom-wide, Non-Classroom areas, and Supporting Individual Students.  We then take that information and use it to help us grow.

We also look at the number of office behavior referrals we have and what behaviors are most common.  For us, we see the majority of our behavior referrals for physical contact and disruption.  Even though about 85% of our students have not had any behavior referrals, we continue to teach and acknowledge positive expectations to keep that percentage over 80%.  We identify students who need more support and use a teaching approach to support them.

Mrs. Sarah Ryan put together a choir concert that was recorded last Monday.  You can find the link to this excellent concert here - https://youtu.be/jS4wIHGasbg.

We will not be sharing clips of wildlife next week on our Tiger Pride News (TPN).  Instead, we are sharing our Masked Holiday Singers.  Students will watch and listen and try to figure out who is singing each day next week.  You can watch the TPN episodes here - https://tinyurl.com/2p98ydd7.

Together we are Tiger Strong!

Take care,

John Beach

As a principal, I have the opportunity to work through conflicts between students on a daily basis.  Students at this age are learning how to deal with emotions and situations involving conflicts with others.  One of the biggest challenges for our students is responding positively when someone is not kind to you.  Many times a student will say something mean back or become physical with the other student.  We continue to encourage students to tell the other person to stop and report it if the behavior continues.  That way I can work with the other student for their poor choice rather than needing to speak with two students who made less than positive choices.

We are looking for volunteers for our Book Fair, which is April 30, May 1, May 2, May 3.  Use this form to sign up for a time to help - Intermediate Book Fair- volunteer sign-up.

Is it bullying?  We field many reports of situations that have been called bullying.  In most cases they don’t fit the definition of bullying.  While we still want to be aware of these situations and deal with them, we also want to give a clear definition of what bullying is.
