Family Update 12/3/21

December 3, 2021

Dear Parents/Guardians:

We continue our social and emotional learning lesson this week.  Our 3rd and 4th graders will be working with Showing Compassion.  Our 5th graders will be introduced to Emotional Management.

We have been sharing some of the background of what we do with Tiger Pride at the Intermediate School.  We have our expectations and what they look like around the school, which we have shared in earlier updates.  This week we are focusing on how we Respond to Problem behavior.  We follow a flowchart to make decisions when responding to behavior.  Our goal is to have a teaching and learning model in regard to responding to behavior.  We look for natural consequences and avoid excluding students as much as we can.

For example, if a student is being disruptive in class or has an argument with another student, we work to resolve those situations and get the student back into class as soon as they are ready to learn.  This flowchart helps us be consistent throughout the school.  There are links within the document that show some of the resources our staff use - Tiger Pride Flowchart - Responding to Problem Behavior.  Please reach out if you have any questions or comments about this document or about anything Tiger Pride related.

We have cameras at the Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge, Sand Dunes State Forest, and near the Middle School.  Here are some clips from November 2021 Part 1.  We have been sharing parts of these clips during our morning announcements.  To view any of the over 130 videos, checkout our playlist - Wildlife Cameras YouTube playlist.

Together we are Tiger Strong!

Take care,

John Beach

As a principal, I have the opportunity to work through conflicts between students on a daily basis.  Students at this age are learning how to deal with emotions and situations involving conflicts with others.  One of the biggest challenges for our students is responding positively when someone is not kind to you.  Many times a student will say something mean back or become physical with the other student.  We continue to encourage students to tell the other person to stop and report it if the behavior continues.  That way I can work with the other student for their poor choice rather than needing to speak with two students who made less than positive choices.

We are looking for volunteers for our Book Fair, which is April 30, May 1, May 2, May 3.  Use this form to sign up for a time to help - Intermediate Book Fair- volunteer sign-up.

Is it bullying?  We field many reports of situations that have been called bullying.  In most cases they don’t fit the definition of bullying.  While we still want to be aware of these situations and deal with them, we also want to give a clear definition of what bullying is.
