Family Update 4/1/22

April 1, 2022

Dear Parents/Guardians:

We’ll continue our social and emotional learning next week with all of our grades talking about and working through the topic of peer pressure.  There is one more lesson after this week for this school year.

LAST CALL Last week we shared about the climate surveys we are giving now.  This week we are sharing the link for families to share their feedback regarding our climate.  The responses are on a scale of Never, Sometimes, Often, Always.  We would very much appreciate you taking the time to complete this short survey - Family Climate Survey.  We use the results for planning and improvement purposes.

The Parent Teacher Organization would like your help with getting the word out!  They are in need of board members and more people interested in being part of the PTO.  The next meeting is on Tuesday, April 5th from 6:15 - 7:30 pm in the Primary School Media Center.

The state-wide severe weather awareness week is next week.  We will be doing our annual severe weather drill on Thursday.  We found a couple of resources you might like to try with your child.  This first link is all about being ready and knowing what to pack in an emergency situation - https://www.ready.gov/build-kit-game.  The second is more of an activity book about titled Play it Safe.

Repeat - Students will be taking the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments in April.  The Reading part is April 12-14, the Math is April 26-28, and Science is May 3rd or 4th (5th grade only).  You can request an opt out form if you do not want your child to participate in this testing.  There is make-up testing available, but if you are able to avoid appointments for your child on those days, it would be greatly appreciated.

We have cameras at the Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge, Sand Dunes State Forest, and near the Middle School.  Here are some clips from March 2022 Part 2.

We have been sharing parts of these clips during our morning announcements.  To view any of the over 130 videos, checkout our playlist - Wildlife Cameras YouTube playlist.

Together we are Tiger Strong!

Take care,

John Beach

As a principal, I have the opportunity to work through conflicts between students on a daily basis.  Students at this age are learning how to deal with emotions and situations involving conflicts with others.  One of the biggest challenges for our students is responding positively when someone is not kind to you.  Many times a student will say something mean back or become physical with the other student.  We continue to encourage students to tell the other person to stop and report it if the behavior continues.  That way I can work with the other student for their poor choice rather than needing to speak with two students who made less than positive choices.

We are looking for volunteers for our Book Fair, which is April 30, May 1, May 2, May 3.  Use this form to sign up for a time to help - Intermediate Book Fair- volunteer sign-up.

Is it bullying?  We field many reports of situations that have been called bullying.  In most cases they don’t fit the definition of bullying.  While we still want to be aware of these situations and deal with them, we also want to give a clear definition of what bullying is.
