March 2023 News from the Counseling Office

Teacher Advisory Update:

In March our TA curriculum focused on Effective Communication. We learned about critical thinking, conflict resolution, types of listening, and ways to listen more effectively. We explored the difference between nonverbal and verbal communication and how 65% of communication happens nonverbally.  We also practiced I statements, and worked on managing our emotions.  Here is a video we showed in TA this month to help students understand the importance on communication:  Why we lose control of our emotions

  1. Discuss with your student when they feel like they lose control, and how they can cope with these emotions.

  2. Ask your students what they learned about how the three types of communication impact conflict in relationships. The three types are: attacking, defending or saying it straight.

  3. Tuesday, March 21st students completed a career cluster inventory, have your student log into MCIS through clever and show you their results.  Find some careers that fit their profile.

All School Assembly:

Tasha Schuh: Friday March 24th

Tasha will be sharing her story of having a life-changing theater accident at the age of 16, that left her a quadriplegic. PATH – an acronym for Purpose, Attitude, Team and Hope – represents the tools Tasha has learned that have helped her learn resilience in her journey and that can help students cope, today.

Our students learned:

  • The importance of having a positive attitude

  • The importance of surrounding themselves with the right people

  • How to find purpose in their daily lives

  • Tangible ways to improve their mental health through resilience

  • The importance of knowing that it's okay to ask for help

Some good follow-up questions for your student would be:

  • What was the best part of Tasha’s message? And why?

  • How will you live your life differently after hearing Tasha speak?

Podcast for Parents

  1. This podcast will help explain why it's important to embrace and regulate our anxiety and how to do so in a healthy and effective way. Why anxiety is good for you

  2. The next podcast we linked in is part 2 and will continue the conversation with Dr. Tracy Dennis Tiwary. This one will dive into anti-fragility and how to raise kids that don't just "bounce back" from stress, but actively grow from it. Raise kids who grow from challenges.
