Keeping Students Home When Sick

Just a reminder: Parents are still expected to screen their children daily and keep sick kids home along with non-sick siblings if exclusion criteria is met. Our goals is to remain open through the end of the school year which can only happen if all families are taking the necessary precautions.

  • Screen your student daily before sending them to school. Please refer to the Home Screening Tool for COVID-19 Symptoms for more information.
  • Students stay home if they are sick. If anyone in your home is sick and meets exclusion criteria, everyone stays home, including all siblings. Please refer to the COVID-19 Attendance Guide For Parents and Families, and COVID-19 Decision Tree for People in Schools, Youth, and Child Care Programs for more information.
  • In order for a sick student and their siblings to return to school, one of three things must occur:
    • A negative COVID test
    • Sn alternate diagnosis
    • The isolation of 10 days/quarantine period of 14 days has run out
  • Students who are COVID positive need to isolate for 10 days from when their symptoms started (or when they tested if no symptoms). If you are waiting for test results on anyone in the home because they are sick, the entire household stays home.
  • Students who are close contacts of COVID positive cases still quarantine for 14 days from their last exposure date. If a positive child or parent does not isolate away from the rest of the household, the remaining household 14 day quarantine cannot start until after the positive cases 10 days of isolation are done.
  • Please make sure you are aware of what type of COVID test your child is getting. Antigen tests are not accepted by MDH or the schools, only molecular PCR tests are accepted. When scheduling a testing appointment for your child make sure to ask if it is a molecular PCR test in order to be accepted.

If you have any questions or are concerned about a possibly exposure to COVID, please contact your school nurse right away.
